In 1978, the legislature enacted a grant program to provide support for existing local rape crisis centers and to encourage the establishment of new centers. These rape centers offer 24-hour telephone counseling services for rape victims, in-person counseling, and referral services during normal business hours.

Amber Alert

In 1996, nine-year-old Amber Hagerman was abducted and murdered while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas. The tragedy shocked and outraged the community. Law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters work together to provide urgent bulletins to the public in the most serious child-abduction cases. The goal is to provide information to the community so it can help in the search and safe return of the abducted child. Statistics consistently show that time is the most important factor when a child is abducted.

The US Postal Office currently sells Amber Alert 39-cent stamps. To help raise awareness of how Amber Alert saves missing children buy some now.
